How to pull off the midi as a petite girl

by - July 18, 2017

For background information, the length of a midi skirt is half way between your knees and ankle. Some might find the length a bit challenging to wear without it looking like something an old school counsellor would approve of. You need to rid the mindset that it is matronly when you want to get on this midi trend wagon.  With the hem being at the smallest part of your body, it actually gives you a taller and slimmer visual illusion! As a petite girl, this is something I always look for when shopping for clothes. Though that being said, sometimes midi skirts and dresses look more like maxi's on me. So how would you pull it off you say? Here's what I think:

1. Choose the right length
As a petite girl, as I stated earlier, midi skirts and dresses can look longer on us than others. Choosing the correct length that flatters us is important to achieve that extra visual boost of height. Ideally, pick a length that is just above the mid-calf. With the hem above the biggest part of your calf, it will make you appear a little slimmer. Alternatively, choose something that ends just below the mid-calf for the same reason. The skirt I wore for this post, I chose the latter.

2. Cinch the waist
Accentuating your waist is the basics of elongating your legs and body. If you decide to select a top that has a special hemline like mine that you cannot tug in, pick one that is more fitted so your waistline shows. Rather you are going for the more classy formal look or rocking the hip street style, define your waist with a belt with the top tugged in or opt for a cropped top.

3. Look for details
Explore different prints and colors, opt for slits, button details, etc. These details will make the outfit playful. Patterns like vertical stripes and linear buttons also aides in the vertical visual to make you appear taller.

4. Play with the shoes
Donning the heels is another height boosting basic. While they definitely look great with a midi for a short girl, I don't reject the idea of pairing a midi with a cool pair of sneakers. However, make sure to choose the shorter length of midi that falls just above the mid-calf to lengthen your legs. Sneakers with midi is very popular among the Asians. Rock the Japanese doll street style with that combo!

What do you think of my ideas? I hope this post gives more confidence to those petites like me to give this awesome trend a try! I'd love to see how you are styling your midis. Let me know in the comments below. Till next time!
